Humanity in the Loop

This newsletter was previously known as ‘AI in the Public Sector’. At the time, I was a public servant; I was cautiously interested in how governments around the world would use and implement AI. I was, at the time, interested in presenting an insider view that wasn’t just about.. using a range of Microsoft products.

I believe that battle is over (and governments are going to just use Microsoft products). I am also not a public servant anymore.

My personal interests have shifted to AI governance, trust and safety, advocacy, legislation. I’m also interested in interrogating water use, energy use, impact to environment, labor conditions, and AI’s role in all of that. I believe that the AI boosters are right: AI is going to change the world in many irrevocable ways.

I also believe that regular people need to have the tools and information to understand what is going on around us. I spend a lot of time reading and writing about AI and its impact on the world, society, humanity.

So I am going to change the focus of this newsletter to: Humanity in the Loop.

Over the coming weeks, I will start to change the social media, web and other properties to reflect the new name change and focus. I’m interested in your thoughts on what you’d like to read about. If you find yourself wondering when you subscribed to a newsletter with this name, I’m hopeful that this email update will remind you: this used to be about AI and government, now it’s about AI and humanity. Until then!
